The village and surrounding area.

Traditional, unspoilt, ancient customs, capture the Duende of this time forgotten village.
Look into the weather lined face of the farmer driving his mules past your door to water, enjoy the bread traditionally baked  in a wood oven from the panaderia, relax and smile........you're in Murtas!

Set between the snow capped Sierra Nevada, facing Mount Gador and the sea, with a view to Africa, the village is a natural amphitheatre of flat roofed Berber houses, clinging like lumps of sugar to the mountainside.
Dominated by the Cerrajón de Murtas, the highest mountain in the Sierra de la Contraviesa at an altitude of 1507m, you will enjoy the clean air and flora and fauna of the area.  Visit the neoclassical church, the largest in the Alpujarras, or Castillo de Juliana, where pottery remains from the time of the caliphate have been found.
Ski at Solynieve during the winter months, take in the beaches of the Costa Tropical in the summer.  The municipal pool is open throughout July and August, and is currently installing a snack bar.
The village itself has a friendly Bar/Restaurant, a butcher, panaderia, (bakery) and chemist.  There is WIFI internet access in the accommodation.
